2 Hour Skomer Puffin Adventure

After crossing the spectacular St Brides Bay we spend an hour at Skomer Island with these lovable seabirds.   Puffins whirl around their colonies before landing, and are usually rafting in large numbers in the quiet bays around Skomer.  Seals, and if lucky porpoise can be found on this boat trip.  A special trip for photographers and a delight for all ages.  Please note we do not land at Skomer Island.  Puffin season is April to early August.

More Information

Skomer Island Puffins, shearwaters and so much more….

Skomer is the largest Pembrokeshire islands and located less than a mile off the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast at Martins Haven.

It’s Puffins that Skomer is renowned for with a thriving colony and thousands of visitors each year delight in these little birds, yet there is so much more to the bird paradise including Manx Shearwaters, Dolphins, Harbor Porpoises, Atlantic Grey Seal, Razorbills, Gannets, Fulmars and the unique Skomer Vole. The island is surrounded by some of the richest waters for wildlife off the British Isles from delightfully coloured sea slugs to magnificent cetaceans.

During spring the island is covered in a display of beautiful bluebells so vast that the whole island appears in a haze or blue, replaced by a tinge of pink when the Campions explode later in the year.

Our Puffin adventure on Ocean Raven starts at our home port of St Justinians.  After a helping hand onto the foredeck, safety brief and lifejackets fitted, once sitting comfortably on our jockey style seats we set sail for Skomer.

Through Ramsey Sound we’ll be keeping an eye open for the resident Harbor Porpoise and the tell tale gannets circling overheard, then out passed Ynys Berry and into the usually calm waters of St Brides Bay.  It’s about 20 minutes to Skomer but there’s plenty to see on the way with St Nons, Green Scar off Solva, and Newgale in the center of the Bay.  It’s a strange sight looking onto Newgale beach from the sea, and it’s a quick zip across with Camel Rock on the left, Martin’s Haven and then beautiful Skomer.

Along the way Puffins may raft and bob, and we’ll stop for any Sunfish or maybe the dolphins and porpoise.

Puffins will bob and duck under the water as we arrive at Skomer.  Thousands of swirling, whirling Puffins all jostling for a landing position or swooning into the sea will be your sights and sounds.

The North side of the island is sheltered with turquoise blues in the sunshine or inky blue waters under cloud rich with sea life and seals.  There is so much to see and it’s a photographers dream to rest on the tubes and click away at the pretty perky puffins and their antics.

It’s all about the Puffins here and so we take a casual trip along the North shore of the Island and if time allows and weather permits, a peak around to the South side too.

This is a wonderful trip for adults and children with an opportunity to leave your seat once we get to Skomer to get that perfect viewing position.

On the way home we’ll call in to the eastern side of Ramsey with its seals and seabirds, and hopefully another chance for the harbor porpoise to make an appearance.
